One Piece Episode 425, “The Strongest Man in the Prison! Poison Man Magellan Appears” – SideReel Review

Posted on: November 9, 2009

Boa Hancock. She's awesome. Magellan's pretty funny too, but...

I’m looking forward to the upcoming movie tie-in episodes of One Piece since they’re more than mere filler. At the same time, I’m sad that we won’t be watching more of the Impel Down arc for a while, because this episode reminds me of everything I like about One Piece.

The chase scenes that made up the early part of the episode had me rolling with laughter, reminding me of the Tom and Jerry or Wile E. Coyote cartoons I grew up watching. Buggy’s ability to come apart lets him bounce back from all kinds of crazy injuries, letting the slapstick violence and wild takes flow freely. From the hippo who can run but can’t turn to the praying mantis who spends more time showing off than fighting, the chases are comic gold.

The other character interactions are a little less golden but still funny, as the major villain is introduced after a series of toilet jokes and stupid, silly lines. Now, the setup for this arc is mostly complete. The heroes are mostly assembled, the villains are on-screen, and the stage is set for some of the over-the-top fights and crazed action that we’ve come to expect from the One Piece series!

Next week starts a four-week special that is linked to the One Piece movie, Strange World. I can’t quite call it filler, since it’s a full, canon story on its own. We get to see one of Gold Roger’s greatest rivals in action, so I can’t wait!
