The Legend of Koizumi Anime Comedy Mixes Politics and Mahjong

Yes, he's based on that Koizumi.

Not pictured: Bush and Bush Jr.

When it comes to anime and manga, there is no subject too sacred, no person too revered for the Japanese to parody. The latest anime to prove this point is Mudadzumo Naki Kaikaku (AKA The Legend of Koizumi) , which is based on a overblown and hilarious manga about world leaders playing mahjong in order to conduct international diplomacy. No one is spared from the artist’s pen – Vladimir Putin, Kim Jong-Il, both Bushes, and a host of other world leaders have shown up pushing depleted uranium mahjong tiles

From a few brief looks through the manga at Kinokuniya, I’m way more interested in this project than I logically should be. It is just too epic and fun to miss out on, and I’m drooling in anticipation of long, loving shots of international bigwigs slamming down mahjong tiles as if this were Hikaru no Go.

The full cast list is after the jump.

Morikawa Toshiyuki as Koizumi Jun’ichirou
Fukuyama Jun as Sugimura Taizoo
Itou Shizuka  as Yukari-tan
Arimoto Kinryuu as Asou Taroo
Genda Tessho as Papa Bush
Tobita Nobuo as Bush Jr.
Nakata Jouji as Puuchin (Putin)
Satou Rina as Tymoshenko

That’s a pretty good cast to play the parodied versions of world leaders. The question is, with the Bush era over, will we see another Japanese parody of Obama in the anime version?

I cannot wait for this to come out. I’ve read the first few chapters and its hilarious. Betting F-15s is pretty much the pinnacle of Serious Business.

As for Obama, I think this is mostly set during Koizumi’s time as PM, so unlikely. Though I’d love to his see Yes We Can! Reach.

Eh? Really? This is making me cry for some reason. It’s also making my head spin.
