THE IDOLM@STER fixes the errors of the past

Posted on: January 28, 2011

So I heard a rumor that in 2007 there was an anime called Idolmaster: Xenoglossia. I was living in Japan at the time, and I largely ignored it, because it was… how do I put this gently… an abomination. It took characters from a video game, THE IDOLM@STER, about girls whose dream was to sing and dance in front of large crowds, and turned it into a show about giant robots and girls who used them to save the earth from destruction.

Now, the Idolmaster series has been pretty popular, and between arcade, Xbox 360, PSP, and Nintendo DS, there have been seven games, with an eighth due out in February. So Xenoglossia was a pretty big failure. And now they are making up for it with THE IDOLM@STER anime.

It's high time these girls get to show their real stuff.

THE IDOLM@STER will feature the 10 girls of the original arcade game (Haruka, Chihaya, Yukiho, Yayoi, Ritsuko, Iori, Azusa, Makoto, Ami, and Mami), the girl added for the Xbox 360 version (Miki), and the 2 girls added in the PSP games (Hibiki and Takane). The official website of the anime doesn’t even mention Xenoglossia, which is probably for the best.

The storyline appears to coincide with the upcoming IDOLM@STER 2 game for the Xbox 360, which brings Hibiki and Takane in as budding idols and graduates Ritsuko and Azusa to support status. The cast is even the same as IDOLM@STER 2 (Yukiho’s seiyuu was changed after the DS game).

Can we finally leave the bad memories of Xenoglossia behind us and look forward to the bright new future? Can we hope that this will be the one, true IDOLM@STER anime? Can we dare to dream? I think we can.

Well, Xenoglossia had this one awesome scene where the base commander went around punching intruding bad guys. *cough* Speaking of abominations, I want to remember that one episode OVA which came bundled with Live for You! was quite bad as well. But, yes, looking forward to this very much.
